Route Map for Knock Hill

KNOCK HILL ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Ordnance Survey map 63.
Distance from city centre to car parking: 48.8km / 30.3miles.
Walking distance from parking: 13.4km / 8.3miles.
Height of climbing: 216m / 712ft.

Quite a short walk, but interesting and a wonderful view from the top over the Firth of Clyde.
Park car at end of houses in Brisbane Glen Road, Largs. NS208605.
Walk along Brisbane Glen Road, passing entrance to Brisbane Lodge, to road on left marked ‘Brisbane Mains’.
Go down this and turn with it over a bridge across Noddsdale Water.
This leads up to Brisbane Mains farm.
Follow road past its front, then over stile at gate, and along side of farm buildings.
Continue along line of road and over three more gates, latterly along line of trees on right.
When road tums towards the right, cut to left and up through long grass ( signs of the old road here ).
This cuts through line of trees and contours round, then up to base of hill.
Avoid taking narrow sheep path up hill to right.
Continue on what was old road which becomes a grassy path which spirals clockwise right to the top of Knock Hill ( 217m / 712ft ).
It is quite clear to see that this was once a fort — it is thought to have been occupied by the Picts and,at times, by the Romans.
It is said to be a vitrified fort, i.e. where loose stones of the walls were fused together under intense heat,
applied by burning timber covering in a strong wind.
Descend on N side steeply to old road which you came up and follow this until it turns away to the right.
Walk over rough ground at an angle towards wall on left.
At a low part there is an old metal gate in the wall. Go through this.
Follow remains of old road, turning slightly left along line of trees.
The old road goes along side of trees, through a gateway, and shortly after leaves the trees and turns left.
Follow this old track until it crosses burn beside some bushes, then bear right along track to gate ,
then to another gate on public road near North Lodge of Knock Castle.
Walk on twisting road which joins main road just before crossing Noddsdale Water.
( At this point note the premises, Netherhall, which were once the home of Lord Kelvin. )
After crossing bridge tum second left.
This leads to Brisbane Glen Road.
